The Prespa Lakes constitute a rare natural asset in the Balkans and are shared between Albania, North Macedonia and Greece. The system consists of Great Prespa and Lesser Prespa, where the latter lies partially in Albanian territory and is the highest tectonic lake in the Balkans, with an altitude of 853 meters. The lake is the habitat of a rich fauna and flora, where many rare and endemic species are found.
It is known for its important colonies of Dalmatian pelican and white pelicanLakes Ohrid and Prespa date back 2–4 million years, harboring unique species such as the koran and the beluga. The area is also home to Church of Saint Mary of Prespa, an important historical and cultural monument. Its earliest inscriptions date back to 1345.
