The Onufri Museum is located in the Berat Castle, inside the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, rebuilt in 1797. This museum is dedicated to Albanian iconographic art and bears the name of the great painter Onufri, a renowned 16th-century master, famous for his use of "Onufri's red", a characteristic color of his art.
The collection contains about 200 objects selected from the funds of churches and monasteries of the Berat district, including icons and liturgical objects dating from the 14th century to the beginning of the 20th century. Among the main authors are Onufri, Nikolla the son of Onufri, Onufer the Cypriot, David Selenica, Kostandin Shpataraku, Adam Kristo, as well as the Çetiri family of painters, representatives of the multifaceted tradition of Albanian iconography.
The collection also includes objects crafted by Albanian goldsmiths and wood carvings made by masters Stefan Barka and Naum Ngjela in the early 19th century, which adorn the cathedral with exquisite artistic details.
Today, the Onufri Museum is one of the most important centers of Albanian ecclesiastical art, preserving and presenting the iconographic heritage of Berat and all of southern Albania.
