The Kacnia Lakes are located on the eastern slopes of Mount Balgjaj, which borders the Mati region, southwest of the village of Kacni—after which the lakes are named. They lie within the Dibra District at an altitude of over 1700 meters above sea level.
The lakes are situated in several large glacial cirques and are of glacial origin. The largest lake measures approximately 400 × 250 meters, covering an area of about 10 hectares. In total, there are 12 lakes. When combined with the glacial lakes of Mati and Bulqiza, Mount Balgjaj ranks as the richest mountain in the country in terms of glacial lakes.
The total surface area of the Kacnia Lakes reaches approximately 30 hectares, with depths ranging from 5 to 6 meters. The lakes are characterized by crystal-clear, cold waters and freeze completely during the winter months.
Rich in biodiversity, they form a unique and fascinating alpine lake ecosystem.
