The Albanian Opera and Ballet Theatre (TKOB) is the most important performing arts institution in Albania, bringing together opera, ballet and the national symphony orchestra under one roof. Located in Skanderbeg Square in Tirana, it is one of the country’s most recognizable cultural symbols and the main center of professional Albanian performing arts.
The institution was founded in 1953, while the building where it is located today was completed in 1956, as part of the monumental complex of the central boulevard. Since then, TKOB has been the main stage of high musical and choreographic art in Albania, realizing hundreds of national and international premieres and promoting generations of distinguished artists.
The repertoire of TKOB includes great works of world music such as Verdi, Puccini, Mozart and Tchaikovsky, but also creations by Albanian authors such as Çesk Zadeja, Pjetër Gaci, Tish Daija and Prenkë Jakova, who in 1959 brought the first Albanian operatic premiere, "Mrika".
Today, the Opera and Ballet Theater is a national institution with regional influence, promoting elite art, educating the young public and representing Albanian culture with dignity on international stages.
