The “Skampa” Theater is located in the heart of the city of Elbasan, one of the oldest and most historic cities in Albania, surrounded by the heritage of the Ottoman fortress, traditional neighborhoods and alleys leading to the main square. Its urban location makes it not only easily accessible for residents and visitors, but also a reference point within the cultural life of the city.
The theater was founded on July 16, 1962, gradually transforming into one of the most important performing arts institutions in the country. In its beginnings, the troupe of professional actors was selected from among the city's enthusiasts and amateur groups, giving life to a new theatrical spirit in Elbasan and beyond.
For decades, “Skampa” has been the place where dramatic premieres, comedies, tragedies and various stage performances have taken place. The theater troupe has performed classical and contemporary works, significantly influencing the artistic and cultural formation of the audience, and producing prominent actors of the Albanian stage.
Beyond the regular season of performances, the theater has an important factor in promoting contemporary art beyond the local scene: the “Skampa” International Theater Festival. Since the late 1990s (with a new format in 1999), this festival has become one of the main theater events in the country, bringing to Elbasan numerous troupes from Albania, Europe, the Balkans and beyond. Performances from physical theater, classical drama, alternative performances, workshops, presentations and discussions are included in its program, which has a multidimensional profile and promotes intercultural dialogue and contemporary creative ideas.
The festival attracts thousands of visitors and artists from different countries, bringing to the city of Elbasan a dynamic artistic atmosphere that goes beyond the closed theater stage, to also take place in urban spaces and activities open to the public.
Today, the Skampa Theater is not just a building where dramas or comedies are performed, it is a cultural reference point, a place that connects generations of actors and spectators, where the tradition of classical theater merges with contemporary research and experience. This institution remains one of the main centers where performing arts are developed, disseminated and celebrated in the city of Elbasan and beyond.
