Icons of Onufri

Master of the 16th century, the characteristic red palette “Onufri’s Red”. Onufri is a great Albanian painter of the 16th century, known for his icons in the post-Byzantine style with vivid colors and deep spiritual details. His works and those of his followers are preserved today in the Onufri Iconographic Museum in Berat, inside the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, where icons and liturgical objects from the 14th-20th centuries are exhibited. The icons are characterized by the use of bright colors, contrasts and detailed motifs, and express a combination of Byzantine tradition with more vivid emotional feelings. This collection shows Onufri’s artistic power and his influence on Albanian iconographic art.
