Albania is a beautiful European country that is building an £88m airport to attract 4m more tourists

Despite boasting a 279-mile coastline adorned with golden sandy beaches and stunning forests, Albania remains a neglected treasure, often overlooked by holidaymakers.
Those who have encountered its charm often compare it to the Maldives, thanks to its crystal clear waters and tranquil resorts.
Unlike popular vacation spots like Spain, Greece and Italy, the Southeast European country is working to increase the rate of tourism rather than curb it.
Albania hopes to bring the total number of visitors per year to five times the country's current population, which is 2.8 million.
The target of 14 million would be an increase of four million from the 10 million visitors reported for 2023.
To boost its attractiveness, Albania is also building a new £88 million airport to cater to tourists.
The introduction of Vlora International Airport will undoubtedly give tourists another reason to visit this riviera, as it will significantly reduce travel time from the airport to the coast.
The Albanian government initially revealed plans for the new airport in 2017 and by 2021, Mabetex International, a company known for its expertise in large-scale civil engineering projects, announced its intention to pour over £88 million into the initial phase, which includes the construction of a runway and terminal.
The future airport is said to have a range of facilities, including a 1.9-mile runway, a 12.43-square-mile terminal, an operations tower and a fire brigade building.
Albania is ideal for budget travelers, with flights from London to Tirana costing less than £100 during peak season, while an average meal can cost you just £5.
