Maligrad Island is located in Lake Prespa, within the Prespa National Park, in southeastern Albania. It is the largest island in Albanian territorial waters and constitutes one of the most unique natural and cultural attractions of the region.
The island is formed by limestone rocks and has a height of about 40 meters above the lake level, with a length of about 700 meters. It is partially covered by Mediterranean vegetation and low forests, creating a beautiful contrast with the blue waters of Prespa.
In the interior of the island is the Church of St. Mary of Maligrad (14th century), a cultural monument with well-preserved Byzantine frescoes, which testify to the ancient history of Christianity in this cross-border area. The island is accessible by boat from the villages of Pustec or Zaroshka, especially during the summer season.
Maligrad Island has been declared a Natural Monument for its geomorphological, ecological, historical and cultural values. It is a symbol of the coexistence of nature and human heritage, being a special destination for ecotourism, birdwatching and cultural tourism in southeastern Albania.
