The Weapons Museum, located inside the Gjirokastra Castle, is one of the city's most important historical attractions and one of the rare museums of its kind in the Balkans. It offers a broad overview of Albanian military history, with a focus on World War II and the period after it.
The Weapons Museum opened in 1971 and is located in a section of the former prison. It exhibits weapons from various historical periods, starting from the Independence of Albania (1912) to the end of World War II. A large part of the collection focuses on the National Liberation War, with weapons used by partisan detachments and by the Italian and German occupying forces.
One of the museum's most interesting spaces is the Artillery Gallery, a long corridor filled with cannons and heavy weapons, most of which were confiscated from foreign forces during the war.
Today, the Weapons Museum in Gjirokastër remains an authentic testimony of Albanian military history, combining the architectural heritage of the fortress with the historical memory of the 20th century.
