Matriz Castle

The Matrizë Castle is located in the Mirdita Municipality and, according to the typology of the construction and the archaeological material, dates back to late antiquity. It is thought to be a fortification from the period of Justinian I, who during the Slavic invasions built or rebuilt a series of fortifications in the territories of Illyria.

The castle has a defensive and controlling function over the Fani valley, where the old road connecting Lezha with Prizren and other eastern regions passed. Its architectural and historical heritage makes it an important point for researchers and visitors interested in the early history of the area.
