Bashtovës Castle, a cultural monument of medieval civilization, stands near the village of Vilë-Bashtovë at a distance of about 3-4 km north of the mouth of the Shkumbin River. The castle was built in the 15th century and served the Venetians for trade exchanges. It has a quadrangular shape with dimensions of 60 x 90 meters, and walls 9 m high. The western part of the castle was rebuilt in the 18th century. According to historical and archaeological data, the castle is thought to have been two-story, with one floor sunk below the surface of the earth, the ruins of which have yet to be discovered.
Bashtova Castle is known as the only castle in the Balkans built on a plain. Its surroundings have remained intact and are today visited by many local and foreign tourists. Many objects discovered in the castle are now preserved in the National Museum of Tirana.
