The municipality of Mat is located in the central part of Albania, in the Dibra region, and includes a mountainous and hilly territory rich in biodiversity, abundant waters and cultural monuments. It borders Dibra to the east, Kruja and Klos to the south, Mirdita to the northwest and Kurbin to the west. The seat of the municipality is the city of Burrel, the administrative and economic center of the area. The municipality consists of the administrative units of Burrel, Baz, Derjan, Komsi, Lis, Macukull, Suç, Ulëz and Rukaj.
The territory of Mat is known for its Illyrian history, ancient castles and protected nature, becoming one of the most important cultural and natural destinations in northern Albania. The area is characterized by clean water sources, dense beech and oak forests, as well as deep valleys that give it a special identity.
The climate is Mediterranean-continental, with hot summers and cold winters, typical of hilly-mountainous areas.
