Elbasan, a bridge between traditions and history.

Elbasan is located in the center of Albania, making it one of the most important cities in the country.

Located in the heart of Albania, in the Shkumbin River valley, Elbasan is the third largest city in the country. It enjoys a strategic geographical position that has always made it a key connection point between the north and the south. The city lies in the Elbasan plain, on the right bank of the middle course of the Shkumbin River, surrounded to the east by the Krasta e Madhe and e Vogël, to the north and northwest by the Ullishtave hills, to the west by the Zaranikës stream, while to the south it is again bordered by the Shkumbin River. To the west passes the Zaranikës stream and to the east that of Manazderia. Surrounded by hills and mountains, the city offers beautiful natural scenery and is an ideal destination to explore Albanian history and culture.

The history of Elbasan is rich and ancient. The city dates back to the Roman period, when it was known as scampiLater, in the 15th century, with the construction of the castle by Sultan Mehmet II, it took the name Elbasan, which means “strong fortress.” The Elbasan Castle remains an important historical symbol today, preserving within it characteristic dwellings, cobblestone streets, and religious buildings from different periods.

The characteristics that distinguish Elbasan are the hospitality of the residents and the traditional cuisine with unique flavors such as the famous ballokum, especially during Summer Day, a pagan holiday of origin in this city that is celebrated every March 14. Elbasan is also known for its former markets, traditional neighborhoods and boulevard with green promenades.

The cultural heritage of Elbasan is very rich. The city is the birthplace of many important figures of Albanian history, culture and education. It also contains a considerable number of religious buildings such as churches, mosques and tekkes, which testify to religious coexistence over the centuries. A special place in the heritage of Elbasan is occupied by the “Skampa” Theater, the “Aleksandër Xhuvani” Museum, the “Kostandin Kristoforidhi” Museum and the numerous cultural institutions that keep the artistic life of the city alive.

Elbasan was once one of the largest centers of crafts in Albania, a city where the noise of the tabaks, the craftsmanship of the goldsmiths, the golden threads of the kazazs, the elegance of the tailors and the finesse of the gunsmiths formed an entire universe of crafts that today survives only in history. In the 16th-17th centuries, the city counted hundreds of workshops, streets named after crafts and guilds that exported products throughout Rumelia (the former European territory of the Ottoman Empire), starting from the famously dyed leathers, to the fine filigree, the handmade folk costumes, the decorated weapons and the skillfully carved qibuks. The numerous toponyms such as Sheshi i Tabakëve or Fusha e Kazazëve preserve the traces of this city, once full of life and craftsmanship of artisans. Today, these rare crafts attract more and more curious tourists who seek to discover the true spirit of Elbasan through their extraordinary stories, techniques, and heritage.
