Tophane Well

Tophane Well is a monument of the cultural heritage of Albania, of the category Cultural Monument of the "Architecture" type, located in the center of Durrës, near "Aleksandër Goga" street, behind the District Prosecutor's Office building, about 200 m from the historic center of the city.

This water well dates back to the 16th century and represents one of the rarest structures of its kind in the city, connected to urban life and the daily life of medieval and Ottoman inhabitants. It functioned as a water source for the neighborhoods of the center of Durrës until the 1970s, serving the social coexistence and urbanization of the area for centuries.

The name “Top-Hane” is historically linked to the Ottoman period and the use of the area for gunpowder production (in Turkish Top Hane means "workshop/artillery"), which indicates that such an enterprise also operated near the well — a factor that also gave it this historical name.

The architecture of the well is characterized by a quadrangular enclosure of large stones and granite columns, which are believed to grow from the earlier Byzantine structure and were used to support the well externally, creating a visible space of about 25 m². The structures present today are also the result of the restoration by the Monuments Atelier in 2005, which restored some of its characteristic elements and made it more visible in the urban landscape.

Pusi i Tophanës (Durrës) is an important piece of evidence of Durrës' urban history, showing not only how the city's inhabitants secured the necessary water, but also the technical and industrial background of the various historical periods that marked the transitions from the Byzantine to the Ottoman period and further into modern times.
