The Paleochristian Basilica of Lin – An Ancient Treasure in the Heart of Nature
On the picturesque peak of the hill of Shën Thanas, on the Lin peninsula (20 km north of Pogradec), lie the ruins of one of the most unique archaeological monuments in Albania – the Paleochristian Basilica of Lin, built in the 6th century AD as a summer residence of the bishops of Lyhnid (present-day Ohrid).
This basilica consists of 7 rooms decorated with extraordinary mosaics, featuring rare motifs such as bees, “eucharistia” (birds pecking grapes), scenes from nature, and geometric figures in rich colors such as white, red, green, and orange. The mosaics are made with great skill from small limestone, marble, brick, and glass tesserae.
In terms of construction and style, the basilica is similar to that of St. Erasmus in Ohrid and the Baptistery of Butrint, testifying to its architectural and historical importance. Unfortunately, it burned down during the Bulgarian invasion in the 10th-11th centuries and was never rebuilt. A visit to the basilica is a unique experience – in addition to its historical and artistic value, it offers a stunning view of Lake Ohrid. The journey from Pogradec takes about 20 minutes.
The center of Lin village can be reached by bus or car, while the last part to reach the ruins is recommended to be walked (about 10 minutes in nature).
