The Great Mosque of Durrës (also known as the New Mosque or in some sources also historically called Varos) is a mosque of special historical, architectural and spiritual importance in the center of Durrës, which reflects the evolution of religious life and the historical periods of the city.
The Great Mosque is located in a central part of the city, near the main square and public areas, making it one of the main centers of Muslim religious life in Durrës and a reference point for visitors exploring the city's historical and cultural heritage.
The construction of the Great Mosque began in the 1930s, with the support of the Islamic people and the city's merchant community, with direct support from the Kingdom of Ahmet Zog I (according to some historical references). The project was carried out with Italian-Albanian cooperation, where Italian architects designed a building that preserved the architectural elements of the Islamic tradition, combined with columns and motifs of the local Durrës style.
When completed, it was considered one of the largest mosques in Albania, illuminating the city skyline on a hill in the urban center and becoming one of the most visible religious and urban objects of Durrës in the first period of the 20th century.
Like many religious buildings in Albania, the mosque was closed during the communist regime (after 1967) and used for secular functions, including its use as a cultural institution called the “Youth Palace”. After the fall of the communist regime, the mosque gradually returned to its original function as a place of worship and center of the Muslim community and has been reconstructed and restored since the early 90s onwards.
The architecture of the Grand Mosque represents a combination of traditional Islamic architectural influences with elements of local and 20th-century colonial style. The structure has a prominent central dome and a minaret, while the interior spaces are open and adapted for prayer and worship of the Muslim community.
Today, the Great Mosque of Durrës is not only an important religious site for local Muslims, but also a renowned cultural site, visited by residents and tourists alike, who wish to learn about the Muslim heritage and the port city's multifaceted history. It serves as a crossroads of history and religious coexistence, reflecting the social and cultural transformations of 20th century Albania.
