The Venetian Tower is one of the most important historical structures of the city of Durrës and part of the fortifications of the Durrës Castle, which depicts millennia of the history of the coastal city. It represents clear evidence of the strategic and military role of Durrës throughout the medieval to modern periods.
The tower was built in the 15th century by the Venetian Republic, which controlled Durrës at this time and used the city as an important strategic and commercial hub on the Adriatic. The structure was built on the remains of an earlier Byzantine tower, used as an observation and artillery point, once equipped with cannons to protect the port and city from naval attacks.
The architectural features of the tower include a circular plan with a diameter of about 16 meters and a height of about 9 meters, with stone walls and small observation windows, while the internal structures are built of bricks and narrow stairs leading to the panoramic upper part. This fortified form and its position near the castle walls make it a key defensive point in the city's fortification system.
Over the centuries, the tower has undergone changes and damage, including the consequences of the 2019 earthquake, but has been restored with the support of international projects, such as EU4Culture (funded by the European Union), which has helped revitalize it not only as a historical structure, but also as a Cultural Heritage Interpretation Center, with modern multimedia equipment and interactive presentations for visitors.
Today, the Venetian Tower is a categorized cultural monument and one of Durrës' most visited attractions, where visitors can explore not only the history of the fortifications, but also panoramic views of the city and the Adriatic Sea from the top of the tower, making it a key reference point for understanding Durrës' long historical heritage.
