St. Michael's Church

The Church of St. Michael, built in the 14th century, is one of the oldest Christian cult sites in the city of Berat and an outstanding example of Byzantine architecture in Albania. Situated on a steep cliff on the southern side of the Berat Castle, it offers not only an impressive panoramic view over the Osumi Valley, but also a profound historical and spiritual experience for visitors.

The church is built in the typical Byzantine style, with a cruciform plan without internal supports, which gives the interior a spacious and light feel. The dome, supported by an octagonal drum, stands above the center of the cross, while the narthex is positioned on the western side. The exterior walls are built with the characteristic technique of alternating red bricks with stones, creating a simple but visually balanced decor.

Inside the church, original fragments of frescoes dating from the period of construction are still preserved, representing selected biblical scenes executed with a restrained technique, but with bold colors and rich iconography. Despite the partial damage it has suffered over time, the church maintains elegant proportions and an architectural refinement that sets it apart from many other similar buildings in the city.

For its high historical, spiritual and architectural values, the Church of Saint Michael has been declared a cultural monument since 1948, and remains one of the most visited and documented points of Albanian Byzantine heritage.
