The new Cathedral of Saint Demetrius is located in the city of Berat and represents a symbol of spiritual revival and the continuity of the Orthodox tradition after the long period of prohibition of religious beliefs in Albania. It was built on the foundations of the old 19th century cathedral, which was destroyed during the communist regime, a period in which dozens of cult objects were damaged and disappeared throughout the country.
The construction of the new cathedral began in 2002, and its completion and consecration were achieved in 2014, thanks to the support of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania and the contribution of local and international donors. The cathedral represents one of the most important objects of Orthodox worship in the city and is among the largest in Berat, both in terms of capacity and importance in the religious life of the community.
Its interior includes modern architectural elements intertwined with Orthodox church tradition. One of the most prominent elements is the skillfully crafted wooden iconostasis installed in 2010, which contains icons made according to the canons of Byzantine iconography. In 2016, an electronic bell system was added to the cathedral, which contributes to the ceremonial organization and announcement of liturgical events.
Today, the Cathedral of Saint Demetrius serves as the main center of religious celebrations, masses, and spiritual activities of the Orthodox community of Berat. It represents an important point of religious and cultural identity, testifying to the resistance and resurgence of faith through new architecture, but built on the foundation of historical memory.
