Lake Shkodra

Lake Skadar is located in northwestern Albania, on the border with Montenegro, and lies partly within Albanian territory with an area of about 149 km². It is the largest lake on the Balkan Peninsula, with a total area of about 368 km², which varies according to seasonal conditions. The lake is fed by several local springs and streams and flows into the Adriatic Sea through the Buna River.

The Albanian area of the lake has been declared a “Managed Nature Reserve”, and in 2005 it was included in the Ramsar list as an area of international importance for aquatic ecosystems and waterfowl. The lake ecosystem is characterized by a rich biodiversity, with hundreds of species of plants and animals, making it one of the most important natural areas in Albania and the region.

The lake offers suitable conditions for tourist activities such as fishing, canoeing or kayaking, bird watching and walks along the shores. The proximity to the city of Shkodra makes the area easily accessible for visitors seeking to combine nature with the cultural and historical elements of the region.
