The Church of St. Evangelism, located on the eastern side of the Berat Castle, near the residential area, represents one of the most important monuments of the city's Orthodox heritage. It is considered the largest and most architecturally elaborate church among the shrines built at the end of the 16th - 17th centuries, serving as a model for the development of ecclesiastical art after the medieval period.
Built on a sloping terrain, the church preserves a complex structure in harmony with the relief, which includes a rectangular nave, a two-story narthex on the western side and a porch (portico) on the northern side, a characteristic feature of the religious architecture of that period.
time in Albania. In the eastern part is the semicircular apse of the altar, equipped with niches for the liturgical functions of the prothesis and the diaconicon, special elements of the eastern liturgy.
In the eastern part, due to the slope of the terrain, the apse ends with a multifaceted shape, at a lower level than the nave, creating a natural and functional contrast with the other parts of the building. The construction is made of limestone, bound with limestone mortar, giving the structure durability and a natural appearance that matches the surrounding environment.
In addition to its architectural values, the Church of St. Evangelism has served for centuries as a spiritual center for the inhabitants of the castle and beyond. It represents the continuity of faith and ecclesiastical tradition in Berat, and remains one of the most appreciated monuments by visitors interested in post-Byzantine architecture, religious life, and the city's cultural heritage.
