The House of the Zekas is one of the most important and representative monuments of the characteristic architecture of Gjirokastra. Built at the beginning of the 19th century by the wealthy Zeko family, it perfectly represents the typical tower house of the Stone City, with massive stone walls, a high structure and spaces organized hierarchically according to the traditions of the time. The house is known for its division into lower defensive and upper residential floors, as well as for its large rooms with numerous windows that offer open views over the city.
The interior is decorated with sophisticated elements such as carved wooden ceilings, decorative fireplaces, internal cupboards and the so-called “reception rooms”, where hospitality was an essential part of the family tradition. Its architecture shows the craftsmanship of Gjirokastrian builders and the high standard of living of the aristocratic families of that time. Today, the House of Zakat is one of the most visited destinations in Gjirokastër, because it preserves the authenticity, history and spirit of the city, becoming a true symbol of Albanian cultural heritage.
