The Medieval Center in the lower part of Berat is one of the most important complexes of Ottoman heritage, with social and religious functions. It includes the Mbret Mosque, the Helvetic Tekke, the Tekke of Shën Qerimi, the dervish lodges and several monumental tombs, with origins dating back to the second half of the 15th century. The complex took its most complete form in the 18th century after numerous reconstructions. During the World Wars, the school and library were destroyed, while today the main buildings such as the mosque, the tekkes and the lodges are still preserved.
