The Clock Tower, one of the most characteristic monuments of the city of Elbasan, is located next to the King's Mosque, inside the Elbasan Castle. Originally built at the end of the 18th century, this tower served as a public instrument for measuring time, in order to regulate the religious and social life of the Muslim community.
The structure is built of hewn stone and brick, with a square shape at the base and narrowing at the top where the clock mechanism and bell tower are located. At its top is the metal cupola that once housed the original bell, which rang to signal important moments of the day, such as prayers in the mosque or public activities in the city.
The first clock was placed in this tower in 1899, according to archival documents, and since then there have been several restorations and technical interventions, always preserving its symbolic and practical function in the life of the city. After damage suffered during the 20th century, the tower was restored in the early 2000s, preserving the original architectural elements and adding a new clock mechanism.
The Clock Tower represents a fusion of Ottoman architecture and urban functionality, and is today one of the identity symbols of the city of Elbasan, further enriching the mosaic of historical heritage within the castle walls.
