The “Sulejman Kulla” Tower is a first-category cultural heritage monument located in the village of Kullas, Ishëm administrative unit, in the Durrës district. It represents a traditional three-story residential-fortress structure that testifies to the vernacular stone architecture and the social life of the local community in the Ottoman period and beyond.
The tower is located in the rural area of Ishmi, rising on a solid stone foundation and offering extensive views of the surrounding village and natural terrain. It was declared a first category Cultural Heritage Monument, by decision taken on January 8, 1977, as evidence of the architectural and historical heritage of the area.
The tower was built in the 18th–19th centuries as a three-story stone dwelling-fortress, measuring about 7 × 9 meters and about 8 meters high. It includes about 20 turrets (small spaces in the walls for observation and defense), and two balconies, which served as observation points and spaces usable by the inhabitants. The upper floors served as living spaces, while the ground floor was used as a warehouse with daily functions and storage of goods.
The structure is characterized by solid stone masonry, built without much ornamentation, but with a clear defensive, residential and military function at a time when community security was a priority.
The tower was restored around 1988, an intervention that aimed to consolidate the masonry and preserve its original structure. Today, the building is in functional condition and can be visited, offering an insight into the typical fortress-dwellings of the area as well as a testimony to the historical rural life in the Durrës district.
The “Sulejman Kulla” tower is the only tower of its kind in the Durrës district, making it a reference point for visitors who want to explore the rural heritage and traditional architecture of central Albania. It forms part of a network of cultural monuments in the area, which together reveal the social, urban history and daily life of the inhabitants for long historical periods.
