The Eastern United Church of St. Peter, otherwise known as the Byzantine Rite Catholic Church, is located in the heart of the city of Elbasan, near “Qemal Stafa” Street. It is one of the rarest objects of worship in Albania that belongs to the Eastern Catholic (Byzantine) rite, representing ecclesiastical union with Rome, but with the preservation of the Eastern liturgy.
Built at the end of the 19th century, this church was erected by the Albanian Unitarian community, composed mainly of converts from Orthodoxy in communion with the Holy See, without renouncing the Eastern rite. Its architecture preserves the traditional features of small Balkan churches, with a simple plan, sloping roofs and the use of stone and wood as building materials.
The interior of the church is decorated with icons and elements of Eastern liturgy, including an iconostasis, a typical Byzantine altar, and frescoes in a mixed East-West style. Due to its unique character, this church has served not only as a place of worship for the local community, but also as a center of unity and interfaith dialogue.
Today, the Church of Saint Peter is preserved as a cultural monument, testifying to the religious diversity and interfaith tolerance that has characterized Elbasan over the centuries.
