The Church of Saint Kolli, located in the village of Shelcan, about 7 km east of the city of Elbasan, is one of the most valuable monuments of Orthodox heritage in the Shpati region. It has been declared a first-category cultural monument and represents an example of post-Byzantine sacral architecture in Albania.
Built in the 16th century, this church has preserved rare mural frescoes inside, which are attributed to the great Albanian icon painter, Onufri, and the influences of the local Shpat tradition. The interior is covered with mural paintings and icons dating from the early post-Byzantine period, including motifs of saints, evangelical scenes and liturgical figures with bright colors and powerful visual composition.
The church structure is built of stone slabs and bricks, and has a basilican plan with a single nave, while the entrances are made from the western and southern sides. Its trussed roof, restored in recent years, and characteristic masonry testify to the combination of traditional construction techniques with local influences of the time.
The church played an important role in the religious and spiritual life of the local community, and the interior paintings are considered by scholars to be one of the most representative examples of 16th-century Albanian iconography, with stylistic elements related to the tradition of Onufri and other masters of the era.
Due to its historical, artistic and cultural values, the Church of Saint Kolli in Shelcan is an important destination for visitors and the history of religion in Albania, offering an authentic journey into the sacred art, early iconography and spiritual memory of the Elbasan region.
