Municipality

The Municipality of Durrës is the main local government institution for the port city of Durrës and its surrounding territory. It is responsible for the management of public services, urban and town-planning development, culture, tourism, environmental protection, social and economic planning, as well as for guaranteeing administrative services for the residents of one of the most important urban centers of Albania.

The Municipality of Durrës aims to implement development policies at the local level by:

  • Administer public services – management of urban infrastructure, cleaning, public lighting, development of recreational spaces, and maintenance of municipal facilities;
  • Supporting economic and tourist development – ​​promoting the city as a historical, cultural and coastal destination, by supporting projects that increase employment and investment potential;
  • Oversee urban planning – drafting territorial and urban development plans to ensure sustainable growth and organization of the city;
  • Provided administrative services to citizens – from civil registration to building permits, vehicles, social services and resolving residents' daily issues.

The Municipality of Durrës is led by the Mayor, democratically elected by the citizens for a four-year term, and supported by the Municipal Council – the decision-making body that approves the budget, regulations, development plans and strategic decisions for the local community. The administrative structure includes specialized directors for sectors such as:

  • Urbanism and territorial planning
  • Services to citizens
  • Social welfare
  • environmental Protection
  • Economic development and tourism
  • Infrastructure and municipal services

The municipality has a key role in promoting the tourist potential, in organizing cultural events and festivals, as well as in cooperating with international partners, with the aim of sustainable development of the city and improving the quality of life of the community.
