Albanian State Bank

The Albanian State Bank in Durrës is one of the most important historical structures of the Albanian financial system, linked to the economic and institutional development of the country during the second half of the 20th century. The building where the branch of the State Bank operated is still today a cultural monument of urban and architectural value for the city of Durrës.

The institution of the Albanian State Bank was officially established on January 22, 1945, with the adoption of the relevant law, after the end of World War II, as the central bank of the socialist republic dealing with the issuance of currency and the country's monetary policy. During the period 1946–1990, it supported the development of the socialist economy with activities that included the issuance of the national currency (Leku), lending to industry, agriculture, and the administration of state payments.

In Durrës, the headquarters of the Albanian State Bank represented a regional operational branch, which supervised banking and financial activities in the area, playing a key role in the functioning of the local economic system and in supporting enterprises and public institutions.

The building that served as the headquarters of the State Bank of Durrës was completed as an independent structure in 1928, when it was built as the headquarters of the National Bank of Albania in the city. The building was designed by Italian architects and skillfully constructed by local technicians; its foundations were placed on the southeastern tower of the Byzantine city defense wall, called the “Great Bastion”.

After major political and economic changes in the country in the early 90s, the banking system was reformed and **The Albanian State Bank was replaced by the Bank of Albania on 22 April 1992, which continued the functions of the country's central bank. The building in Durrës was transferred to new commercial banking institutions, including the National Commercial Bank (BKT), which used the facility as an operational branch.

The Bank Building in Durrës has been declared a “Second Category Cultural Monument”, recognizing its historical, architectural and identity values in the city’s urban landscape. This value is related not only to its role in Albania’s economic history, but also to its integration into the historic area of Durrës, near other objects of archaeological and urban importance.

Today, the building represents a testament to the evolution of the Albanian banking system, from the period of the National Bank of Albania building in the 1920s to the institutional transformations of the 20th century, preserving its historical heritage for future generations.
