Butrint is located in southern Albania, near the city of Saranda and just a few kilometers from the Strait of Corfu. Set in a unique natural landscape, between Lake Butrint and the Vivari Channel, it is one of the most important archaeological sites in Albania and the entire Mediterranean region. The park covers a vast territory stretching from the village of Berdenesh in the north to Cape Stillo in the south, including the islands of Ksamil.
At the heart of the park lies the ancient city of Butrint, a microcosm of Mediterranean history, where Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian roots intertwine. Monuments such as the theater, basilica, Roman baths, the temple of Minerva, monumental gates and surrounding walls testify to the continuous development of the city over the centuries. Many objects discovered during excavations, including statues, portraits, epigraphs and cult objects, reflect the cultural and artistic wealth of the settlement.
The park is a destination visited all year round by domestic and foreign tourists, as well as by researchers of archaeology and history. In addition to archaeological values, Butrint offers a rich nature with biodiversity and rare landscapes, making it one of the most attractive points of cultural and natural tourism in Albania. In 1992, Butrint was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and in 2000 it was declared a National Park, with an area of 29 km², to protect both cultural and environmental heritage.
