Adrianople

The Ancient Theatre of Adrianopolis, located in the village of Sofratika (Lower Dropull), is a Category I Cultural Monument.

Archaeological excavations have uncovered important elements that prove that Adrianople was a developed administrative and cultural center during the period of the Roman Empire. The theater is thought to have been built during the reign of Emperor Hadrian (117–138 AD).

This theater is the only example in the Balkans of a theater building built in an open field, and not on a hillside as was common in antiquity. It has a diameter of about 50 meters and a capacity of approximately 4000 spectators. The outer walls, 90 cm thick, are reinforced with buttresses, which shows the high level of engineering skill of the time.
